The idea of red cell substitutes is not new. In Ovid s Metamorphosis the witch Medea restored Jason s aged father, Aeson, by slitting his throat to let out old blood, replacing it with a magic brew she had concocted (1). Sir Christopher Wren was one of the first to apply the new knowledge about circulation to blood substitutes. In 1656 he infused ale, wine, scammony, and opium into dogs and from these efforts conceived the ideal of transfusing blood from one animal to another. Lower actually carried out the first transfusion experiments (2).

In addition to new bars, lounges and restaurants, parties and press events routinely served specially created cocktails, and cocktail conception specialists like Jerri Banks, Francesco Lafranconi and Dushan Zaric and Jason Kosmas of Cocktail Conceptions are now an established part of the liquor industry. 

Mr. Zaric is a bartender, and we were talking about cocktails. He is also, with Jason Kosmas, a fellow bartender, a partner in Cocktail Conceptions, a consulting service in Astoria, Queens, in the apartment the two men share and where they develop cocktails for restaurants, bars and liquor companies. They have been friends for four years and have a combined bartending experience of thirteen years. 

At Pravda, at 281 Lafayette Street in New York, Jason Kosmas, the bar manager, makes his Vesper as if it were being served behind tire Iron Curtain, with three parts vodka to one part gin, a reverse of the original recipe. Pravda is a vodka bar, and Mr. Kosmas thinks vodka is what people want at the moment.

Jason Green has successfully applied the Selenski method to the synthesis of (+ )-bromoheliane (79, Fig. 4.38).34 In this example, two equivalents of the chiral enol ether are added to the benzaldehyde 77 in diethyl ether (0.1 M) and cooled to —78 °C. Methyl Grignard is then added. The cycloaddition occurs while the reaction warms to room temperature. The benzopyran adduct 78 forms in 80% yield with 50 1 diaster-eoselectivity. DFT calculations and experiments suggest that the diastereoselectivity depends on the magnitude of the HOMO-LUMO band gap. In this instance, the LUMO of the supposed o-QM intermediate is computed to be —2.6 eV, whereas the HOMO of the enol ether is —5.9 eV. A 50 1 selectivity is recorded for resulting 3.3 eV gap. For reactions of 2,5-bis-OBoc-4-methyl-benzaldehyde, where the HOMO-LUMO gap is larger (3.6 eV), a 20 1 ratio of diastereomers is observed. 

I have my rosary, and I have that which I could not have hoped for the Jason ring. Suidas thinks, that by the golden fleece was meant a book of parchment, which is of sheep s skin, and therefore called golden, because it was taught therein how other metals might be transmuted. 

Oh, very well, says Gareth, waving a hand at the silent presses behind him, so obviously poised to start up with the latest project. I m doing a picture book, Jason and the Golden Fleece, which is going very well. Come and look. ...
