Castor Oil. Castor oil [8001-79-4] (qv) is the fixed oil from the seeds of Picinus communis Linne. Pale yellowish or almost colorless, it is a transparent viscid Hquid with a faint, mild odor and a bland taste followed by a slightly acrid and usually nauseating taste. Its specific gravity is between 0.945 and 0.965. Castor oil is soluble in alcohol, and miscible with anhydrous alcohol, glacial acetic acid, chloroform, and diethyl ether. Ricinoleic acid (i -12-hydroxy-9-cw-octadecenoic acid) (Fig. 6) accounts for 80-90% of fatty acids in castor oil (from Ricinus communis). It is found in other plant species and in the sclerotia of the ergot fungus Claviceps purpurea). Lesquerolic acid (i -14-hydroxy-ll-cw-eicosenoic acid), which is a C20 homolog of ricinoleic acid, occurs in Lesquerella species (up to 70% of total fatty acids). Isoricinoleic acid (i -9-hydroxy-12-cw-octadecenoic acid, or 9-OH 18 2 12c) is a major acid in the Wrightia species. In plants, several C16 and C18 mono, di, and trihydroxy fatty acids are stmctural components of cutin (a polyester constituent of plant cuticle). 

Isoricinolic acid [(S)-9-hydroxy-(Z)-12-octadecenoic acid] occurs as the glycerol ester in the seed oil of Wrightia tinctoria and other species of the Apocyna-ceae as well as in microorganisms see also hydroxy fatty acids.

The Annona squamosa Linn. (Annonaceae) is a small tree native to tropical America and the East Indies. It is cultivated in India for its flnit. The seed contains 23% oil with 9.8% isoricinoleic acid. The major fatty acids are oleic (37%), palmitic (25.1%), linoleic (10.9%) and stearic acid (9.3%) (Ansari et al., 1985).

The stereoisomeric pairs of ricinoleate, methyl isoricinoleate, and methyl esters of three additional bis-homoallylic hydroxy fatty acids were separated as their a-naphthylethyl isocyanate derivatives [696]. A silica column and a 95/5/1 hexane/ ethyl acetate/THF mobile phase generated the separation. Elution was generally complete in <30 min and resolution was excellent in all cases.
