Remove the sep funnel from the iron ring. Hold stopper and stopcock... 

Never place the flask in the ring without a screen (Fig. 60). The iron ring heats up faster than the flask and the flask cracks in the nicest line around it you ve ever seen. The bottom falls off and the material is all over your shoes. 

HINT. When you set up a heating mantle to heat any flask, usually for distillation or reflux, put the mantle on an iron ring and keep it clamped a few inches above the desktop (Fig. 61). Then clamp the flask at the neck, in case you have to remove the heat quickly. You can just unscrew the lower clamp and drop the mantle and iron ring.

Use the ring stand, small iron ring, funnel, Erlenmeyer flask, and filter paper to set up a filtration apparatus. Attach the iron ring to the ring stand. Adjust the height of the ring so the end of the funnel is inside the neck of the Erlenmeyer flask. 

Accdg to Greener (Ref 7, p 22), the earliest cast cannons made of copper and tin were produced by a founder named Aran at Augsburg, Germany. They were primitive breech-loaders, built up of iron strips surrounded by iron rings — a method which continued for several centuries (See illustrations on p 22 of Ref 7)... 

Gasoline and kerosene rerunning was accomplished primarily in horizontal batch shell stills heated by direct firing or internal steam coils and surmounted by a vertical rectification column with partial condensers to supply reflux. The rectifying column in some installations was packed with iron rings, pipe fittings, earthware crocks, tin cans, or any suitable material readily available. In other units a fairly common type of column was the Heckmann bubble cap tower.
