For ionic electroactive polymers the effect is due to an electrical difriision of ions or molecules. This diffusion leads to swelling or contraction when the ions enter or leave (migration) regions of the polymer. In some cases the deformation is caused by reaction of ionic species. The voltage employed in these materials is low (below 10 V) but the two major disadvantages are that these polymers require the presence of water and salts and that the chemical consumption on the electrode is inevitable. [Pg.25]
