In a breakthrough paper, Yoshida has shown that phospholipids were acting as an ionophore to facilitate the transfer of alkali metal ions and also arginine cations but not for TEA+, Ck, HCO3-, S04 , and picrate [326]. This facilitated transfer phenomenon has since been widely investigated in a series of papers that all confirmed this ionophoric property of the phospholipids [327].
