Ion-responsive monolayers

Deposition of macrocycles bearing lipophilic side chains at the air-water interface could yield ion-responsive molecular films. 

Various developments may be envisaged, in particular towards monolayers effecting ion recognition at an interface (of interest, for instance, for selective detection and sensors, see Section 8.4.5) or ion-binding, electro- or photoactive films.
