Inversion of rings

Inversion of ring A causes significant shifts of the carbon signals of rings A and B in steroids. In 5/5-cholestane, the C-19 methyl carbon resonates about 12 ppm towards... [Pg.340]

Benzyl bromide can be converted into ethylbenzene (731) by the reaction of Me4Sn. The use of HMPA as a solvent is important. Overall inversion of configuration takes place at the chiral center of deuterated benzyl bro-mide[598]. The cyanomethyiation[599] and methoxymethyiation[600] of aromatic rings are carried out by the reaction of cyanomethyltributyltin (732) and methoxymethyltributyltin. [Pg.237]

A potential energy diagram for nng inversion m cyclohexane is shown m Figure 3 18 In the first step the chair conformation is converted to a skew boat which then proceeds to the inverted chair m the second step The skew boat conformation is an inter mediate in the process of ring inversion Unlike a transition state an intermediate is not a potential energy maximum but is a local minimum on the potential energy profile... [Pg.119]

The most important result of ring inversion is that any substituent that is axial in the original chair conformation becomes equatorial in the ring flipped form and vice versa... [Pg.120]

Nucleophilic ring opening of epoxides has many of the features of an 8 2 reac tion Inversion of configuration is observed at the carbon at which substitution occurs... [Pg.679]

Modification of the Carbohydrate Ring Substituents. Replacement of hncomycin s 2-hydroxy group by methoxy or by hydrogen (74), or inversion of the configuration of the hydroxy group at C-4 or at C-2 destroys activity (75). [Pg.90]

The inversion of the substituent and the lone-pair on nitrogen takes place slowly at room temperature and has been extensively studied (77AHC(2l)207, 77IZV2266, 77IZV1687). The inversion takes place by a buckling of the ring and the mixtures obtained are those with the trans orientation predominant (77IZV2266). [Pg.10]

Substituted 2-haloaziridines are also known to undergo a number of reactions without ring opening. For example, displacement of chlorine in (264) with various nucleophilic reagents has been found to occur with overall inversion of stereochemistry about the aziridine ring (65JA4538). The displacements followed first order kinetics and faster rates were noted for (264 R = Me) than for (264 R = H). The observed inversion was ascribed to either ion pairing and/or stereoselectivity. [Pg.74]

The broad conclusion of all these studies is that alkyl radicals are shallow pyramids and that the barrier to inversion of the pyramidal structures is low. Radicals also are able to tolerate some geometric distortion associated with strained ring systems. [Pg.679]
