Introduction - The Meaning of Oxidation and Reduction

In practical terms, a number of definitions are in common usage and these are presented in Table 9-1. Using these criteria, we see that the reactions presented in Figs. 9-1 b and 9-1 c are unambiguously oxidations and reductions respectively. 

In this chapter, we will concentrate upon the oxidation reactions, which have proved to be very sensitive to metal-ion control.
