Intramolecular Reaction of Haloaryl-Linked Arenes

Structurally interesting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons can be readily constructed by using a cyclization method, for which the reactions in Equations 10.32-34 are representative examples [53-55]. In the double cyclization of Equation 10.33, the arylation of the C(sp )-H bond as well as that of the C(sp )-H bond is involved. 

Fagnou and coworkers have systematically examined the effect of phosphine ligands in a variety of intramolecular aryl-aryl couplings [7, 8], and have shown that suitably bulky phosphines, such as PCy3 and 2-(dicyclohexylphosphino)-2 -(N,N-dimethylamino)biphenyl (Equation 10.35) [56], are often effective.
