Inorganic natural pigments properties

Extenders are chemically inert, naturally occurring or synthetic, inorganic compounds which are included to confer specific properties to the paint. Such properties include suspending the pigment to prevent the formation of hard settlement, improvement of build , and the provision of tooth or key to improve intercoat adhesion. [Pg.586]

The nature of the interfacial structure and dynamics between inorganic solids and liquids is of particular interest because of the influence it exerts on the stabilisation properties of industrially important mineral based systems. One of the most common minerals to have been exploited by the paper and ceramics industry is the clay structure of kaolinite. The behaviour of water-kaolinite systems is important since interlayer water acts as a solvent for intercalated species. Henceforth, an understanding of the factors at the atomic level that control the orientation, translation and rotation of water molecules at the mineral surface has implications for processes such as the preparation of pigment dispersions used in paper coatings. [Pg.90]

Some of these are natural products such as indigo, chlorophyll, and cochineal, but the majority are synthesized in a series of steps involving dye intermediates (any of the 3000 or more organic and inorganic chemicals used as raw material precursors to manufactured dyes, the most important of which are benzene and naphthalene). Coal tar dyes refers to the dyestuffs originating from the complex mix of hydrocarbons (benzene, toluene, xylene, pyrene, naphthalene, anthracene, etc.) present in coal tar (8007-45-2).
