C. N. R. Rao Obtained his Master s degree in chemistry from the Banaras Hindu University, Doctor of Science degree from the University of Mysore, and Ph.D. (and later D.Sc. honoris causa) from Purdue University. He worked as a postdoctorai research associate with Professor K. S. PItzer at the University of California at Berkeley. Before joining the Indan Institute of Science about 7 years ago to initiate a new department devoted to soKd-state and structural chemistry, he was a Professor of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Dr. Rao s interests are in solid-state chemistry, sir-face science, spectroscopy, and molecular structure. He is a Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy and of the Royal Society, London. He was selected a Centennial Foreign Fellow by the American Chemical Society in 1976. He Is Vice President/Present-Elect of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. [Pg.117]
