Wen and Fan [6] have provided a comprehensive listing of various tracers and experimental techniques for determining the RTD in flow systems. Recent studies [10,11,12] have been performed employing an impulse tracer to determine the RTD in bubble columns and an oscillatory flow electrochemical reactor. The author [13,14] has employed both step-change and an impulse to determine the RTD of nozzle type reactors analysis of the RTD involves an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS), a cine-projector, and a chart recorder. Figures 8-7 and 8-8 show the nozzle-type reactors and the AAS, respectively. Figure 8-9 gives a typical response curve from the AAS. [Pg.680]

If the feed to a system is switched instantaneously from one supply to another, a step-change residence time experiment can be performed. The second feed must be distinguishable from the first, but both should have the same density and viscosity and behave in the same manner within the system. A step signal is often performed by switching from undyed to dyed feed, unless the tracer is expensive or unpleasant (e.g., radioactive tracers) in such a case, an impulse tracer is used. [Pg.684]

The central volume principle can be extended to a multiphase system consisting of P various immiscible subregions but with a single flowing phase (5,44). Then, if the processes for tracer exchange among various phases are linear and the equilibrium distribution of tracer is linear, the mean of an impulse tracer response is ... [Pg.118]
