Implicit association test

At the Royal Institution in 1810, Dalton described how he tested the prevailing chemical explanation of the uniform distribution of the atmospheric gases. Note the implicit assumption of simple combinations of only two or three particles in a new association ... 

A couple of years ago, Kelly et al developed an implicit solvation model for aqueous solutions, related to those we discussed above in section HE. In a more recent work, they tested the model for the calculation of aqueous acid dissociation constants, i.e., the free energy change associated with the reaction... 

To complicate things further a reader might (reasonably) argue that since eqn (2.30) corresponds to an interpolation, we could simply apply eqn (2.26a). This is true and it depends somewhat on the approach the analyst wants to stress. If the working procedure will be to replicate all calibration and test solutions the same number of times in all cases, then eqn (2.30) would be advantageous and he/she is implicitly adopting a maximum likelihood statistical solution. If the calibrators will be replicated a dilferent number of times than the test solutions, then it would be better to use eqn (2.26a) and the analyst is implicitly adopting an unbiased solution with minimum variance. These alternative approaches are a direct consequence of the approximated nature of the decisions undertaken to associate a variance with a prediction obtained by SAM.
