Imaging plates are exposed similar to radiographic films. They are read out by a LASER-scanner to a digital image without any developing process. After optical erasing of the virtual picture the same IP can be used cyclic up to more than 1000 times. The life time is limited by the mechanical stability of the IP s. An IP consists of a flexible polymer carrier which is coated with the sensitive layer. This layer is covered with a thin transparent protective foil. 

Image plates have a spatial resolution comparable to film with a much larger dynamic range. However, they still suffer from the need for scanning which, even with ingenious online carousels and dedicated scanners, still makes it impossible to conduct genuinely real-time interactive experiments. The examples of diffraction data included in this review illustrate the use of the various types of detector.

Such tips have also been employed in a newer STM, shown in Figure 1, that employs a single tube scanner, and allows for fluid delivery and removal via a fluid transfer line. This approach, discussed in greater detail below, was successful in that Au could be plated from, and imaged with, these tips (58). 

Lack of advances in optics has hampered improvements in microscopic imaging. Development of adaptable, inexpensive fiber optics to transmit high-energy femtosecond pulses from mode-locked lasers, custom phase plates, and miniature laser beam scanners for endoscopic microscopy instruments offer the potential for enormous advances in laser scanning microscopy for various applications, including medical diagnostics and surgery.

The inhibitory effects evident in the formation of the visible pellets are examined electronically by capturing the image of the test plate using a flat bed scanner.
