Ignition pills

The socket housing of the ignition pill was in glass reinforced nylon 6, with sacrificial caps in unfilled nylon 6. 

The ignitability of carpets and rugs is regulated by requiring compliance with the methenamine pill test, included in 16 CFR 163013 and 16 CFR 1631.14 As is often the case with the U.S. regulatory tests, the test is more properly described by an ASTM consensus standard, in this case ASTM D 2859,80 under the jurisdiction of the ASTM committee on fire standards (ASTM E05). It is important to point out that (a) some imported small carpets and rugs (usually, those made of cotton and other cellulosics) are often not tested and may not comply with the requirement and (b) codes in the United States have not normally been requiring methenamine pill results, but have focused on critical radiant flux requirements, based on ASTM E 648.40... 

The compounds should be ignited in a small pill box resting on a plate. All the ingredients must be dried and powdered separately, and then lightly mixed on a sheet of paper. Always bear in mind that sulphur and chlorate of potassium explode violently if rubbed together.

If the experiments be performed in a room, the various mixtures can be ignited in a pill box standing on a plate or saucer. All the ingredients must be carefully powdered separthoroughly mixed, as otherwise successfiil coloured fire cannot be produced.
