A dietary excess of potassium is normally excreted rapidly from the body, chiefly in the urine. Some research workers believe that high intake of the element may interfere with the absorption and metabolism of magnesium in the animal, which may be an important factor in the aetiology of hypomagnesaemic tetany (see p. 119). [Pg.116]

In New Zealand, where cows are pastured throughout the year, hypomagnesaemic tetany occurs most frequently in late winter and early spring. In Australia, a high incidence of the disease has been associated with periods of rapid winter growth of pastures. [Pg.119]
