The lactone sulfoxide (62) has been used in the s5mthesis of (+)-A factor (115), a potent autoregulating factor essential for streptomycin production [103]. Conjugate addition of the hydroxymethyl carbanion equivalent (113) to the nonchelated conformer (see Figure 5.3) of (62) gave, after reductive desulfinylation, O-protected 3-hydroxymethyl-4-butanolide (114) in 87% ee, which was subsequently converted to the A-factor (115) (Scheme 5.40).
