Hydroxylamine sulphonates and related compounds

It is convenient to deal with the reaction of sulphite with nitrite and the subsequent and side reactions which accompany it in a single treatment. A fairly recent review is available. The component reactions are shown in Fig. 1. 

Reactions marked Rj have been isolated in kinetic studies and the relevant conclusions are summarized briefly in Table 11. No attempt at complete summary of previous publications will be made here. 

No kinetic measurements so far made can distinguish (H0)2N-S03H from ON-SOsH as the source of the reactions the rates of which are represented by and i 2 The present choice is largely based on intuition. In the same way, the competing processes of sulphonation and reduction (Rn and R12) are written as though a single intermediate has alternative modes of rearrangement. Alternative hypotheses could be presented. Very little work with alkaline solutions has been reported. Ackerman and PowelP examined the alkaline hydrolysis of hydrox-ylamine-N-sulphonate, viz.
