Hydroxy Halides

Less detailed information is available concerning the rates of reactions of most hydroxy salts of inorganic acids indeed, the qualitative changes occurring during stepwise or overall removal of water have not been established for many systems. The behaviour characteristics of a number of hydroxy halides are mentioned below, as are the dehydroxylations of representative minerals. Some aspects of the relationships between the reactions of minerals and structurally similar metal hydroxides are critically discussed by Brett et al. [92].

Dehalogenation. Barton et at. (1, 148) effected dehalogenation of steroidal /i-hydroxy halides with chromium(II) acetate and butancthiol as the proton donor in DMSO. The method is only useful with tertiary halides. A recent improvement that permits reduction of halides of all types uses the ethylenediamine complex of CrtCIOzh and the tetrahydropyranyl ethers of the /J-hydroxy halide. Catalytic amounts of the reducing agent can be used in "indirect electrolysis." The reaction is convenient for preparation of deoxynucleosides.1... 

An electrochemical reduction procedure using a chromium(II) salt as the catalyst is effective for the dehalogenation of P-hydroxy halides. This procedure is a convenient entry to deoxynucleosides, as shown in Scheme 8.
