Hydrazoic acid polymer

In the early development of n-triazole chemistry a number of reactions leading to the 4,5-dicarboxylic acids and their derivatives were discovered and should be explored further. Fries oxidized benzotriazoles (Eqs. 46,47) and prepared a broad range of acid derivatives. Some especially promising compounds in this series have been prepared from what was then called a hydrazoic acid polymer (4.3-1) by reaction with nitrous acid (Eqs. 48,49). Thermolysis of 5-aminotetrazole above 200 °C gave hydrazoic acid (HN3), hydrazoniiun azide (H5N5), cyanamide and a polymer (CHsNs) and the reaction was sensitive to the medium used (72CI(L)294>. Thermal decomposition of explosive tetrazole-5-diazonium salts (102) has been used to generate carbon in the atomic state (74JA7830).
