Hussein, Saddam

There continnes to be public concern about the possibility of their being used in future. When Saddam Hussein was in power in Iraq, there was evidence that a chemical weapon of this type was used against Kurdish villagers. Subsequently, it was widely believed that these were among the weapons of mass destruction held by Saddam Hnssein s regime weapons that failed to materialize after the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Since these events, there has been concern that weapons of this type may be in the possession of rogne states— or individual terror groups. [Pg.202]

Baath Party—The official political party in Iraq until the United States debaathified Iraq in May 2003, after a war that lasted a little over a month. Saddam Hussein, the former ruler of the Baath Party, was targeted by American-led coalition forces and fled. Baath Party members have been officially banned from participating in any new government in Iraq. [Pg.30]

Fedayeen Saddam—Iraq s paramilitary organization, which was said to be equivalent to the Nazis SS. The militia was loyal to Saddam Hussein and was responsible for using brutality on civilians who were not loyal to the policies of Saddam. They did not dress in uniform. [Pg.33]

Although the war was a decisive military victory for the coalition, Kuwait and Iraq suffered enormous damage and Saddam Hussein was not removed from power. In fact, Hussein was free to turn his attention towards suppressing internal Shite and Kurd revolts, which the coalition did not support. Iraq agreed coalition peace terms, but every effort was made by the Iraqis to frustrate the implementation of the terms, particularly United Nations weapons inspections. [Pg.118]

In 2001 the strategy of containment, in the form of sanctions and inspections, appeared to be working in Iraq and was certainly denying Saddam Hussein the ability to develop WMD. The switch from containment to invasion, it now seems clear, was not the result of any new... [Pg.129]

The use of Cipro to treat anthrax infection emanated from research carried out in 1990 at Fort Detrick, Maryland (see later). The army was concerned that Saddam Hussein could introduce germ warfare in the Gulf War in the form of anthrax. Sixty monkeys were infected with a strain of Bacillus anthracis by aerosol and were divided into six groups. One group received a vaccine alone another received the vaccine and antibiotics and three groups were treated for 30 days with one of three different classes of antibiotics—penicillin, doxycycline, or Cipro. A control group received saline injections. [Pg.173]

On August 2, 1990, Saddam Hussein sent Iraqi troops into Kuwait - allegedly in support of Kuwaiti revolutionaries who had overthrown the emirate. Iraq was known to have a large stockpile of CWs during its conflict with Iran and confirmed that they would use CWs. [Pg.21]

During the Gulf War in 1991, there were widespread fears that Saddam Hussein would use chemical and biological weapons on Coalition forces. However, these fears were not realized and no weapons of mass destruction were deployed. UN Inspection teams proceeded to destroy many of Iraq s stockpiles following Iraq s defeat, although whether stores remain is still a matter of considerable debate today. [Pg.1859]

Chemical weapons were used by Saddam Hussein s Iraqi government both on the battlefield in the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s and by Saddam Hussein s troops as a terrorist weapon in Kurdish villages in the northern part of Iraq. The attack on and massacre in Halabja, Iraq, on March 16, 1988, did not at the time create concern in most countries or most people, but increased awareness of the potential consequences of chemical attacks has made the Halabja massacre and its photographs a symbol of chemical weapons use against civilians around the world. [Pg.654]

One more thing Taurus, unlike Aries, doesn t get angry easily, for which the rest of the world is grateful. But when you do blow up. .. let s just say that some of the worst mass murderers and dictators in history — men like Hitler, Lenin, and Saddam Hussein — were born under the sign of the Bull. [Pg.55]
