Once you have determined the probable functional group, you can consnlt Section 5.19 to see if the entire spectrum fits the expected patterns for the suspected functional gronp. Section 5.19 is a useful tool that should not be overlooked. 

If you are totally stuck, an approach that usnaUy woiks is to actually draw all the structures you might think are possible, predict what their NMR spectra should look like, and compare them to the unknown compound. Usually only one structure will match the NMR spectrum of the unknown.
