How do you know what is inside an atom

Imagine that it is your birthday, and there is one wrapped present that is different from all the rest. Unlike the other gifts that you can open, you can only guess what is inside this package. In trying to determine the structure of the atom, early chemists had a similar experience. How good are your skills of observation and deduction  

Using as many observation methods as you can, and without unwrapping or opening the box, try to determine what is inside the box. 

Record the observations you make throughout this discovery process. 

Describe how you were able to determine characteristcs such as the size, shape, and composition of the object in the box.
