Hot recycling in a central plant

This method gives the best possible quality mixture and ensures high construction quality. The advantages and disadvantages of this method are outlined in Table 18.3. 

Mixing is carried out in hot mixing batch plants or drum-mixing plants capable of incorporating RA. Details on hot mixing plants can be found in Section 8.2. 

The percentage of RA or RAP used for the production of recycled asphalt is dictated by a number of factors such as (a) type of mixing plant used, (b) usage of recycled asphalt (i.e. surfacing, binder courses or asphalt base) and (c) suitability of constituent materials of the RA. 

Generally, less RA is used for the production of recycled wearing course mixtures in comparison to RAs for binder or base course recycled mixtures.
