There is very little research on the safety of horse riders... 

Three horse riders were killed and 120 injured in road accidents. 

Now I am brought to Pontefract in my turn. A horse slips and stumbles on the cobbles as we turn into the Castle Garth. Its rider curses, and slashes his whip across its neck. The drawbridge echoes under our hooves, there is the clang of bolts, and almost... 

The bus system has to contend with the same problem that the CDC had delivering the correct packages (passengers) to the correct destination. The pony express had the same problem. As a rider swooped down to pick up a sack of mail, somebody had to make sure that the mail in the sack was supposed to go to the place where the horse was headed. And the rider had to recognize his destination when he got there. 

The continuity of nature is also evident in Magritte s Carte Blanche . In Fig. 6 we see a horse and rider in a forest the horse does not go around or between the trees, it goes through the trees. We see here a macroscopic version of the tunneling effect in quantum mechanics. 

For want of a nail the shoe is lost, for want of a shoe the horse is lost, for want of a horse the rider is lost. ... 

The energy expended by both horse and rider is obtained through the exothermic combustion of glucose in cells.

Figure 16.12 shows the energy diagram for an exothermic chemical reaction. The red line represents the reaction pathway with no catalyst present. The blue line represents the catalyzed reaction pathway. Note that the activation energy for the catalyzed reaction is much lower than for the uncataiyzed reaction. You can think of the reactions activation energy as an obstacle to be cleared, as shown in Figure 16.13. In this analogy, much less energy is required for the horse and rider to clear the lower barrier than to jump the higher hurdle.
