Royleanone (316), found in 17 Salvia species and relatives (317-341) including horminone (319) and the new diterpenes 7-oxobarrilierone (340) and its acetoxyderivative (341) which we have recently isolated from Salvia barrelieri [3]. The paraquinone abietanes may be 6,7-unsaturated (342-345) or 5,6-unsaturated (346-347). The double bond may be external (348). 

The more highly oxygenated abietanes royleanone (34), 6,7-dehydroroyleanone, horminone (35), taxoquinone (36), 7-oxoroyleanone (37), 6j8,7a-dihydroxy-royleanone (38), and 7a-acetoxy-6i8-hydroxyroyleanone (39) have been obtained ... 

Diterpenoid quinones have been isolated from a number of the Labiatae. An o-quinone, ethiopinone (38), has been described as a constituent57 of the roots of Salvia aethiopis (Labiatae) and the known quinones horminone and 7a-acetoxy-royleanone have been isolated58 from S. lanata. From Salvia candidissima Vahl subsp. occidentalism Hedge, six abietane diterpenoids were isolated, five of which were known compounds ferruginol, horminone, 7-acetylhorminone, cryptanol. 

X0 group was missing and there was a hydroxyl group at C-12. The spectral data resembled that of horminone, except for the additional acid group at C-4 instead of Me-18. 

A new abietane diterpene l-oxo-abieta-8,1 l,13-triene-18-oic acid (19) and the known compounds horminone and ferruginol were isolated from the roots of S. tcmentosc. The molecular formula of 19 C20H26O3 was derived from its HRMS (w/z 314.1887). The H NMR spectrum of 19... 

Salvia limbata yielded two known abietane diterpenoids ferruginol and abieta-8,11,13-triene. Salvia multicaulis Vahl syn. S. acetobulosa has yielded six new abietane and norabietane diterpenoids in addition to 1-oxoferruginol, 3-oxo-ferruginol, horminone, pisiferal, 18-oxoferruginol and sempervirol. 

Other new abietane diterpenoids obtained from S. multicaulis were 12-methyl-S-dehydro-horminone (33), 12-methyl-S-dehydroacetylhorminone (34).
