Hoogsteen geometry

The argument over the orientation of the strands in poly(A)-poly(U)-poly(U) and the way the second Urd is paired with Ado has probably been settled by the work of Leng (18), who showed that the poly(U) strand bends back upon the poly(A) and is, therefore, parallel to the poly(A) strand. This favors pairing of the second Urd with Ado in the Hoogsteen manner. Recently, new X-ray data (19) have confirmed this geometry. It should be noted that the best X-ray pictures ever obtained (20) are those of poly(A) poly(U) which is In the A form [Fig. 6.6(a)]. [Pg.77]
