It is worthwhile clarifying the SME of polymers compared to SMPs. Liu et al (2002a) have pointed out that all polymers, even those with no apparent networic stracture, intrinsically show SMEs on the basis of rubber elasticity, but with varied shape memory performance. If a polymer is deformed and cooled down to a frozen state quickly, so that the stress relaxation is effectively avoided, the elastic stress generated in the deformation can mostly be preserved. When the material is reheated to a high temperature, the stored stress is released, resrrlting in some recovery of its original shape. [Pg.3]
