Hexamethyl phosphotriamide

Irradiation of non-absorbing monoacetates on sugars at any positions on the ring in a hexamethyl phosphotriamide solution (HMPA) with 5 % water leads in excellent yields to deoxy sugars [75-79]. This methodology is of particular interest for sterically hindered hydroxyl groups found in D-fructopyranose derivative 79 as well as in a-L-fucopyranoside 80 which are difficult to obtain by classical methods (Scheme 42).
