Heterogeneous oxidation catalysed by dust particles

Oxides and other solid compounds of Mn, V, Ni and Fe undergo redox reactions, and these particles catalyse oxidation through surface-adsorbed species  

The transition metals mentioned are present in particulates emitted from the combustion plant, and are active in promoting the subsequent SO2 oxidation (by electron transfer).
