Similarly the combination of R2PN and NSCl units affords heterocycles containing phosphorus, nitrogen and three coordinate sulfur (e.g. and 5) which may be considered as hybrids of the well known ring systems (R2PN)3 and (NSC1)3.

The interaction of phosphaarsenes with diazomethane opened a synthetic route to three-membered heterocycles containing phosphorus, arsenic, and carbon atoms. Jutzi has described the creation of phosphaarsiranes as a crystalline product by treatment of the corresponding phos-phaarsene with diazomethane at low temperature (Equation (15)) <92ZAAC(610)75>.

The synthesis of 5-membered heterocycles containing phosphorus was achieved through the intermediate formation of an arylphosphonate through a step [193-195]. Thus, bromoaniline (18) was transformed into thebenzazaphosphole derivative 19 as illustrated in Scheme 4.38 [194]. 

The fourth chapter Selected Five-Membered Phosphorus Heterocycles Containing a Stereogenic Phosphorus presents the description of the synthesis and use of these compounds in a few asymmetric syntheses.

Abstract This review presents the synthesis of selected five-membered phosphorus heterocycles containing a stereogenic phosphorus in an optically active form. Their utility in a few asymmetric reactions is also briefly mentioned. 

A very large number of heterocyclic compounds are known consisting solely of phosphorus and chalcogen atoms, as well as those containing phosphorus, chalcogen and carbon or other hetero atoms. Such heterocycles have been the subject of several reviews2,83,84 and the discussion here will be limited to some representative examples of these compounds. 

Volume 1 covers primary, secondary and tertiary phosphines (PR3H3 , n= 1-3), polyphosphines (both P—(C) —P and R(P) R, n > 1) and heterocyclic compounds containing phosphorus.
