A variety of heterocyclic antibiotics and phy to toxins have been found to date. These compounds or their derivatives are essential for daily life as useful agrochemicals and medicines. Total and semi-synthesis of these natural products and related analogous compounds are important for the elucidation of structure-activity relationships and for further development of novel and effective agents. This chapter reviews synthetic studies of biologically active heterocycUc natural products containing nitrogen atoms in their structures, such as glutarimides, antimycins, and tabtoxins. 

Examples of synthetic studies of heterocyclic antibiotics involving nitrogen atoms in their structure (glutarimides, antimycins, and tabtoxins) have been described. Further studies including total and semi-synthesis of analogous compounds as well as natural products are essential for elucidation of the SAR studies, and for the development of novel agrochemicals and medicines.
