Perhaps the most concise exposition of alchemical theory, acknowledged by adepts from all ages, is the famous "Emerald Tablet of Hermes Trismegistus." Legend has it that this tablet predates the Biblical flood and was inscribed by Thoth himself on a large plate of alchemically produced emerald ... [Pg.14]

Hermes Trismegistus here carries his traditional attribute, the armillary sphere, in his right hand, and in the left a scroll on which is written the first verse of the Emerald Tablet. The predominant colors are red and blue red for his robe (the large cape is white) and blue for his cloak, belt, and hat. The two other panels are by the same hand one represents Hippocrates, the other Aesculapius. Originally, Trismegistus probably stood between the two physicians, but nowadays the three panels are displayed separately, though in the same room. [Pg.140]

It s a Dream Team in another sense as well. Although the reputed author of the putative Emerald Tablet, the touchstone of alchemy, there is no evidence that a Hermes Trismegistus ever existed. The name of the reputed father of alchemy, Her-mes-The-Thrice-Great, is a bit suspicious. In any case alchemy came to be called the hermetic art. When we hermetically seal something, we protect it from air much as some alchemical experiments were sealed in glass and buried literally for years. [Pg.139]

The Emerald Tablet is part of the Lost Wisdom of Lamech Lamech s three sons were Jabal, Jubal and Tubal-cain, respectively a mathematician, a mason and a metalworker. The sons preserved the ancient wisdom of creative science on two pillars called the Antediluvian Pillars. Hermes Trismegistus supposedly discovered one of these pillars and transcribed its sacred geometry onto the Emerald Tablet.
