Helen Archbold Mrs. Porter

Helen Kemp Archbold,84 born in 1899, was educated at Clifton High School for Girls, Bristol, and entered Bedford College in 1917. Graduating in 1921, she obtained one of the places reserved for women in Jocelyn Thorpe s organic chemistry [Pg.125]

She [Helen] obtained one of the two or three places in Professor Thorpe s organic chemistry department that were made available to women by the persuasion of Dr. Martha [Pg.126]

Whiteley set the high standards of Helen s future work.84 [Pg.126]

Archbold combined her academic brilliance with a taste for adventure and travel. Unfortunately, her personal life was dogged by tragedies. Both her first husband, William George [Pg.126]

Porter, and her second husband, Arthur Huggett, died after only a few years of marriage. Archbold herself died in 1987 at the age of 88. [Pg.127]
