When I started writing this book, it was exactly 50 years ago that I became acquainted with organo-transition metal chemistry. In 1819 ETA. Hoffmann wrote a story about a miner s death at Falun in 1670. Others were inspired by the same true story. Heinrich Heine wrote a ballad. Richard Wagner sketched the outline for an opera called Die Bergwerke von Falun. Later Georg Trakl and Franz Fuhrmann used the theme. 

As a historical note, the very first arene metal compounds were made as long ago as 1919 by Franz Hein, but were then believed to be polyphenyl compounds of chromium, e.g., G QHs) This is now known to be (16-XLIV).
