Hyperlipidemia is a condition characterized by the presence of elevated lipoprotein levels in the blood. The term hyperlipidemia encompasses a number of different conditions, but it most often refers to high levels of cholesterol in the form of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). LDL cholesterol is often called bad cholesterol. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is the good form of cholesterol. High LDL and/or low HDL levels are widely believed to be linked to increased heart disease risk. Because of the prevalence of hyperlipidemia in developed nations, antihyperlipidemic drugs are in high demand. 

You have probably heard the term steroid used in the context of athletics. (See Figure 13.25.) Our bodies contain steroids, such as testosterone (a male sex hormone) and estrone (a female sex hormone). Steroids also have important medicinal uses. For example, budesonide is a steroid that is used to treat asthma. One of the most common steroids is cholesterol. This compound is essential to your normal body functions, but it has been linked to blocked artery walls and heart disease, as well.

The causes of blood deficiency are linked directly with deficiency of these four organs. It is often seen in chronic diseases, improper diet or in conditions of starvation. It can also occur following heavy blood loss. Long-term stress and overwork can directly weaken the Heart, Spleen, Liver and Kidney, causing blood deficiency.
