After supper we heard Mass in the chapel, as private a Te Deum and prayer for future aid as the Mass and crown-wearing at Paul s that morning had been public. The clamor of the day was suddenly stilled. Edward and I knelt together, so close that his arm touched mine. A different fear crept over me. What would he think of the worry-carved lines about my eyes, my thin flesh slack with the idleness of our days in sanctuary, a tooth drawn, that scald on my arm, so many small, weary hurts to my worn body ... 

Pauling, who previously had heard Sommerfeld lecture on the old quantum theory at Caltech, now heard Sommerfeld lecture in Munich on the new wave mechanics. Pauling instantly liked the physicists new interpretation of the electron. The hydrogen atom could be thought of as...

The few scholars who heard Safford or later read his handsomely-published report were mainly hearing about psychoactive mushrooms for the first time, only to be told that the mushrooms never existed. But there was one important dissenter—Dr. Plasius Paul (Bias Pablo) Reko, an Austrian physician who had engaged in extensive botanical collecting as a hobby while living in Mexico. Reko had become convinced that teonandcatl referred to mushrooms, not Safford s hypothesized peyote. 

On the weekends, Pauling spent almost all his time in the study. He would emerge only when he heard Ava Helen ringing the doorbell to call him to meals. The children, under strict orders not to make noise or bother their father, saw little of him. Crellin remembered when he was litde, listening through the study door as Pauling dictated letters on the other side and wondering who the person was named Comma that his father always talked to. 

Then, during a long visit to England in early 1948, Pauling heard about another approach. British researchers were saying that, instead of a kinked ribbon, keratin and other proteins might have a molecular structure more like a spiral or, as some called it, a helix. 

The test ban went into effect on October 10. The next morning, as the Paulings were eating breakfast with friends, a call came in from their daughter Linda. Daddy, have you heard the news she asked her father.
