Douglas Rayner Hartree, 1897-1958, was Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Manchester and was later Professor of Mathematical Physics at Cambridge University. He became a computer pioneer, working with ENIAC, one of the early electronic computers. Shortly after World War II he said that computers would have as great an effect on civilization as would nuclear energy. [Pg.798]
