Bruce T. Moran is Professor of History at the University of Nevada, Reno. He has a particular interest in the role of patronage in the history of science. His most recent publications include The Alchemical World of the German Court (Stuttgart, 1991), Chemical Pharmacy Enters the University Johannes Hartmann and the Didactic Care ofChymiatria (Madison, 1991), and an edited volume. Patronage and Institutions Science, Technology and Medicine at the European Court, 1500-1750 (Woodbridge, 1991). He has also recently published in Pharmacy in History a translation of Paracelsus s Herbarius.
