Haemanthus natalensis

The milk and wine crinum which is common to the southern United States has been found to contain considerable quantities of orinamine and a new alkaloid which was identified as 6-hydroxycrina-mine (CIjXXII) 17). The latter alkaloid also is quite abundant in Haemanthus natalensis 29). 6-Hydroxycrinamine, C17H19NO5 (mp 135°-140° and 210° [a] +46° in CHCI3), formed a dihydro derivative (mp 251°-252° decomp.). The alkaloid formed apohaemanthidine (CLXXIII) upon treatment with acid. Methylation of 6-hydroxycrina-mine with methyl iodide afforded a quaternary salt which was converted... [Pg.370]
