Laser-guided bombing. A guidance concept devised developed by MICOM (US Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Huntsville, Alabama) scientists applicable to bombs, rockets, missiles St artillery shells. Other uses of lasers include eye surgery on detached retinas, spot welding, holography, isotope separation, accurate determination of the moon s orbit by reflection of laser light off a reflector placed on the moon s surface, and laser-guided bombs and missiles. Possible future uses include terrestrial and extraterrestrial communication, applications to computers, and production of the high temperatures needed for controlled nuclear-fusion reactions. 

Smart Bombs. There are two types of smart bombs currently in use by the USAF — the laser guided bomb first introduced in southeast Asia in May 1968, and electro-optically (EO) or HOBO bombs which entered service in that theatre in February 1969. The former type of munition is used in 500, 2000 and 3000-lb categories, and the EO bomb is produced in 2000-and 3000-lb sizes...
