Group theory nomenclature for crystal field states

States a, b, e, t refer to one-electron descriptions according to symmetry properties. 

States A, B, E, T refer to mutlti-electron systems of corresponding symmetry. 

Subscripts g symmetric under the operation of inversion through the centre of symmetry no change of sign of the wave function upon inversion. u antisymmetric under the operation of inversion at the centre of symmetry change in sign of wave function upon inversion. 

1 refers to mirror planes parallel to a symmetry axis.
