As mentioned above, employment of MWCNT for field emitter will be one of the most important applications of MWCNT. For this purpose, MWCNT is prepared by the chemical purification process [30,38], in which graphite debris and nanoparticles are removed by oxidation with the aid of CuCl2 intercalation [38]. Purified MWCNT is obtained in the form of black and thin "mat" (a flake with thickness of ca. a few hundreds of [im). Figure 7 shows a typical transmission electron microscope (TEM) picture of MWCNT with an open end, which reveals that a cap is etched off and the central cavity is exposed. [Pg.8]

Graphite materials produced at 600-1100°C may find applications in lithium batteries and supercapacitors. Currently, similar flakes are produced in a complex process including graphitization at above 2500°C,16 followed by intercalation and exfoliation of graphite15. Graphite is found in various parts of the world including Brazil, Canada, Czechoslovakia, China, Korea, Madagascar, Mexico, Sri Lanka and the United States and occurs in three forms—flake, crystalline and amorphous— with quite divergent compositions and properties (Table 2.2).The products are milled to a controlled particle size and find application in various forms of lubricants, electrical brushes, batteries and carbon additives, and can be baked with clay for lead pencils. [Pg.25]
