Let us suppose that a good core function has been constructed and turn attention to the valence-electron system, the number (Nv) of electrons to be considered by VB methods now being relatively modest. It should be noted that the valence system may include a number of bonds and lone pairs and that the term core is used in a general sense to include all other electrons e.g a number of different atomic inner shells or, in the context of organic chemistry, even the electrons of a strongly bonded framework providing the effective field in which the 7r-electrons move. Reoxidation occurs when the metallic iron in hot DRI reacts with oxygen in the air to form either Ee O or Ee202. The reaction continues as long as the DRI remains hot and sufficient oxygen is avadable. Because reoxidation reactions are exothermic and DRI is a good insulator, it is possible that once reoxidation begins inside a pde, the DRI temperature increases and accelerates the reoxidation rate. Although the inner core of the pde may reach temperatures up to the fusion point of iron, the maximum temperature of the outer parts of the pde will be much lower because of heat dissipation. [Pg.431]

Composite-Based Laminates. Grade CEM-1 are laminates with continuous-filament glass cloth surfaces and a cellulose core, all with a flame-resistant epoxy resin binder. With good punching practice, sheets up to and including 2.4 mm (0.094 in.) in thickness may be punched at temperatures not less than 23°C (73°F). PhenoHc and furfuryl alcohol resins have a high char strength and penetrate into the fibrous core of the fiber stmcture. The phenoHc resins are low viscosity resoles some have been neutralized and have the salt removed. An autoclave is used to apply the vacuum and pressure required for good impregnation and sufficient heat for a resin cure, eg, at 180°C. The slow pyrolysis of the part foUows temperatures of 730—1000°C are recommended for the best properties.
