The Gold Bug belongs to the group of Poe s stories concerned with the thematics of interpretation, deciphering and translation, where codes have to be cracked and (mis)interpretation is the focus of the narrative. [Pg.81]

Although I focus on Poe s major contribution to detective fiction, the Dupin stories, students of the genre also note the presence of detection in other stories, particularly The Gold-Bug (1843), The Man of the Crowd (1840), and Thou Art the Man (1844). [Pg.146]

Chitin is among the most abundant polysaccharides found in exoskeleton of crustacean like crubs and shrimps, in the crust of the insects like beetles, gold bugs, and grasshoppers, and in the cell wall of bacteria and fungi like moulds and mushrooms. It is found in association with proteins and minerals such as calcium carbonate. The different sources of chitin differ somewhat in their structure and percentage of chitin content. [Pg.347]
