Glycerol Medium Test for Ketogenesis

Speciation of A. aceti and A. pasteurianus requires the ability to detect oxidation of glycerol (the carbon source) to dihydroxyacetone, a property called ketogenesis  

Bring to volume with thorough mixing and transfer to appropriately sized stoppered test tubes. 

After cooling, inoculate with isolate and incubate. 

Once growth is observed, evaluate glycerol oxidation using Clin-itest rapid-reducing sugar test kits. 

Interpretation Glycerol is a nonreducing sugar alcohol, whereas products of its oxidation have reducing properties.
