Duff has recently de eloped a synthesis for hydroxy aldehj des based on the reaction of phenols -with hexamethylenetetramine in glyceroboric acid. The glyceroboric acid is prepared by heating ycerol (150 g) with boric acid (35 g) at 170°C until free of water. In general this may be accompliriied iu approximately 30 minutes. In this liquid approximately 25 g of the phenol are heated with approximatelj 25 g hexamethylenetetramine at 150-160 C...
