Revolution, Glorious :

In the bloodless Glorious Revolution, William and Mary defeat English King James II, abolish the standing army, and restore— to Protestants only—the right to keep and bear arms. 

In the hierarchy of the British nobility, the dukes are the highest rank of royalty, taking second place only to the monarchy itself. The Duke of Devonshire is at the center of the interlocking families of the Cecils, Salisburys, and Macmillans who have mn British politics since the Glorious Revolution.

In the Glorious Revolution (1688-89) the Catholic King James II was overthrown and replaced by William of Orange and his wife Mary. The Bill of Rights (1689) to which Hamilton subsequently refers limited royal power and guaranteed the primacy of Parliament.
