Globoid leucodystrophy

A significant proportion of patients with an LSD have neurological involvement, which can be manifested as developmental delay and behavioral changes (Table 2). In addition to the disorders mentioned, accumulation of certain gangliosides has been observed in various other diseases with involvement of the central nervous system, such as Niemann-Pick disease, infantile Gaucher s disease, met-achromatic and globoid cell leucodystrophy, subacute encephalitis. Accumulation of gangliosides may also be found in tumors an example is the isolation of the ganglioside Glact (a ceramide lactoside) by Seifert and Uhlenbruck (1965) from meningeomas.
