Practical interest in nitrides is mainly focussed in their use as tough ceramics such as sialons and interstitial nitride coatings on metals [368,369]. Silicon oxynitride glasses are of importance in fiber optics as their refractive indices depend on the nitrogen content. There are surely other interesting properties awaiting exploration.

The fibers of oxynitride (Si-O-N) and oxycarbide (Si-O-C) glasses in which some oxygens in the Si02 glass network are replaced by nitrogen or carbon atoms, and also those of crystalline nitride and carbides have been prepared by the sol-gel method, as listed in Table 10-3.
